T-Mobile's CEO Philipp Humm resigned today, the company confirmed.
Jim Alling, T-Mobile's COO, will take over Humm's duties while the company searches for a replacement.
Humm will pursue a career outside of T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom, in order to reunite with his family in Europe, the company said in a press release.
Humm, who has been with T-Mobile for seven years, was initially responsible for the company's mobile presence in Germany, as well as managing the sales and service activities of the European mobile companies within Deutsche Telekom.
He took over as T-Mobile CEO in May 2010.
"Philipp Humm has given the company some important initiatives over the past years," Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann said in a statement.
"Under his leadership the cost situation at T-Mobile USA has vastly improved," he said, "and [Humm] led the company during a difficult phase regarding the planned merger with AT&T."
In a letter Alling wrote to T-Mobile employees, which was posted on the company's blog, the interim CEO said he will carry on the Challenger strategy and will "lead this organization to positive growth."
"While we may be in a high-tech industry, I firmly believe T-Mobile is a people-based business," Alling said.
Among the "top-of-mind highlights" he wants the company to focus on are network modernization, including T-Mobile's $4 billion 4G LTE network rollout expected in 2013, building the "No More Mr. Nice Girl" company brand, and driving revenue.
Alling gave no further explanation for Humm's resignation, simply saying that he "has decided to leave the business."
The company went through a "restructuring" last month that was meant to help fund the rollout of its 4G LTE network, but left 900 employees without a job.
Meanwhile, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless announced on Monday a deal in which both cell providers will purchase and swap spectrum in the Advanced Wireless Services band, in order to boost their 4G LTE coverage.
